I would say underwater fashion photography is more challenging then anything you can do above ground in terms of photography. There are so many variables going on in the water, with limited time to capture the image you see in your minds eye. Everything is constantly moving, including yourself as you try to capture the image. Getting a natural expression from your subject can take some time for them to get comfortable in the water and and comfortable working with the camera. Then you have to consider light and the lack of it and how to overcome that. High wattage movie lights, an ikelite housing and a wide angle lens are the few essential tools we work with to create some of these images.

We typically bring tons of technical gear with us to the pool, just so we can pull things up on a large screen. It is very hard to read what is going on in the water on a small LCD screen on the back of the camera.

Most of all I enjoy the original art that being in a weightless watery environment creates. There are only so many things you can plan for? and then you let the water take over and create a completely unique and original photographic work of art.

In this digital age where everyone has cameras, scanners, and home “photo printers,” we hear this all the time: How do professional (or personal) photographers charge $X for an 8×10 when they cost just $1.50 at the drugstore? Well my first response is, have you seen the difference in print quality from the drug store and what a professional can offer you? You are paying for art, for time and for expertise.

The Real Cost of the One-hour portrait session

Let’s look at the actual work involved in a one hour portrait session. This may even be important for people just starting out, who have a new DSLR and think, I am going to start a business.

• Travel to the session
• Setup, preparation, talking to the client, etc.
• Shoot the photos
• Travel from the session
• Load images onto a computer
• Back up the files on an external drive
• 2 – 4 hours of Adobe

The real cost of doing business

Shooting professional photography is a skill acquired through years of experience. Even though a DSLR now costs under $1,000, taking professional portraits involves much more than a nice camera. Most professional lenses alone cost upwards of $1500 just to make sure your image is its absolute best.

Most personal photographers take years to go from buying their first camera to making money with photography. In addition to learning how to use the camera, there is a mountain of other equipment and software programs used to edit and print photographs, run a website, etc. insurance, props,? samples etc.

Every one needs an accountant, and attorney a hair stylist and a photographer they can trust. Someone who has their best interest in mind and someone who is skilled at what they do. So as you begin to look for the photographer that is right for you, make sure you consider what your end goal is.
